Journal entry #2 - edited ( summative)

Journal Entry #2
In our lit circles groups, our group talked about how it is alright to kill but only in specific situations, we also talked about how pain is necessary for growth. My group had mixed opinions about killing being justifiable, i believe that you should be able to kill an animal for food and killing anything for the safety of yourself."Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in!" (pg 125 ch 7). This quote shows how hungry the kids are and it shows that killing a pig is necessary for survival because many people cannot survive mainly on fruits. Diki and Serena felt that it was not okay to kill things because of the harm they caused to the island. The boys of the island need to kill pigs and other animals to survive, otherwise they will die so i think that it is not only allowed, but it should be necessary for them to kill animals. It was different for when we discussed if pain is necessary for growth, we all felt that it is because pain shows you that you can get through the hard times. We all felt that pain is just weakness leaving the body. Just like if the boys survive and get off the island, they will grow in many different ways. They will find that they do not need to be so dependent on everyone else, and that they can be independent and survive. Just like what is happening right now in Japan with the the earthquake. The people that survive this disaster will be able to grow as people through the pain they had to live through. They will be able to survive independently because they have to survive independently right now. My group has great discussions, but the only thing that holds us back is that we are on different parts of the book and that makes it harder for us to discuss the book without ruining parts for the other members of the group.

  3. YOu have brought in a good connection and you have supported your writing well with many examples from the text. Now to help further develop it next time try weaving in an eq as well. I like how you referred to the two questions from the sheet. Overall well done.
