Journal #3 (summative)

For our lit circles this week, we were instructed to look at the imagery and connections. When looking for quotes I came across the quote "The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away." This shows that everything that the children knew and loved, was slipping out of their grasps and they could not do anything to stop it. For the next lit circle, we were told to find as many connections as we could, then share them with our group. We were able to find some good connections. Vincent and I were told to find a T-T connection, one connection we found was how the book Lord of the Flies connected to the Even Stevens Movie. The movie has a family that was told that they were getting a free paid vacation, but instead they were sent to an island where they had to fend for themselves. Later on in the movie, the family decides that they don't need everyone. They then choose to split up. This is a lot like how Ralph and Jack split up everyone. I found that this is also a lot like the situation in Libya. How Ghadafi has spilt his country into two sides and when the society tried to rebel against him, he began to kill them. Personally, I do not think that it was a good idea to split up in the movie, in Lybia or the book because every team is stronger with numbers. Families, and friends are supposed to stick together in the end, not split up and lose the trust and help that could have been used by the others. I connected this to the EQ: What does power have to do with fairness and justice?. Everything above connects to this essential question because all of the power got to the leader's heads. It made them make bad decisions, that lost lives and destroyed trust. People that are higher up can get power hungry, and they can use that to be unfair and unjust, and I think that is what we have to stay away from because it will make the world unlivable.
Overall, my lit circle discussions with my group went exceptionally well. We found many quotes and we were able to complete the sheet. Everyone spoke a fair amount and everyone added on to other members ideas.

Journal entry #2 - edited ( summative)

Journal Entry #2
In our lit circles groups, our group talked about how it is alright to kill but only in specific situations, we also talked about how pain is necessary for growth. My group had mixed opinions about killing being justifiable, i believe that you should be able to kill an animal for food and killing anything for the safety of yourself."Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in!" (pg 125 ch 7). This quote shows how hungry the kids are and it shows that killing a pig is necessary for survival because many people cannot survive mainly on fruits. Diki and Serena felt that it was not okay to kill things because of the harm they caused to the island. The boys of the island need to kill pigs and other animals to survive, otherwise they will die so i think that it is not only allowed, but it should be necessary for them to kill animals. It was different for when we discussed if pain is necessary for growth, we all felt that it is because pain shows you that you can get through the hard times. We all felt that pain is just weakness leaving the body. Just like if the boys survive and get off the island, they will grow in many different ways. They will find that they do not need to be so dependent on everyone else, and that they can be independent and survive. Just like what is happening right now in Japan with the the earthquake. The people that survive this disaster will be able to grow as people through the pain they had to live through. They will be able to survive independently because they have to survive independently right now. My group has great discussions, but the only thing that holds us back is that we are on different parts of the book and that makes it harder for us to discuss the book without ruining parts for the other members of the group.

Summative Movie Analysis

Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7YllAOqpF4
Plot Summary: http://www.ruinedendings.com/film2746plot

1) The characters convey darkness, which is shown by how Smeagol has an evil and dark side to him which forces him to do wrong things to his friends. Also, the setting conveys darkness seeing as it is set in a dark land like Mordor. Mordor is covered in smoke which gives a dark effect. Mordor is also where the Evil Lord Sauron lives. The setting is an obvious layer.

2) The film maker conveys darkness and evil through the setting, characters, and plot. The setting in Mordor conveys darkness and evil. There is a volcano that makes the land covered in black smoke that gives it a dark effect. Characters such as Golem and Sauron convey evil and darkness. Golem kills his cousin to get the ring. Sauron is the evil ruler of Mordor and has killed many people. The plot conveys darkness as Frodo must travel to Mordor to destroy the ring, but as he holds the ring he becomes dark. The ring corrupted Golem, and makes him do whatever it takes to get the ring. He also tricks Frodo into thinking that he is good, so that he can get close to him and try to steal the ring. The expression of darkness that impacted me most was when Golem killed his cousin to get the ring. This showed that Golem was evil and would do whatever it took to obtain and keep the ring.

3) A character can represent evil by his actions, whether it is acts of revenge, selfishness, or greed. Golem represents evil because he shows all of these actions. He bites off Frodo's finger in an act of revenge to get the ring back; he also kills his cousin in an act of greed and selfishness to obtain the ring.

4) The connection I thought of was text to text. I connected Lord of the Rings with Star Wars. In both stories, there is an evil dark lord trying to gain power by doing dark and evil deeds.

Does evil or fear lead to one infliction of violence or the observation of violence?
Yes, in the lord of the Rings, fear of the ring's power causes people to fight with one another to have the ring destroyed. Basically the good side want to destroy the ring because they fear how much power it has and how much damage it can do, whereas the evil side want to keep the ring so they can use its power to take over the world. Also Frodo observes violence as he tries to take the ring to Mordor. He watches as his team fights Sauron and his men.

To improve my piece I added a text to text connection and the character questions because I had not included them before. I also added another example in the second question.
